New, simpler Australian business names registration

Australia is on the verge of having a national online registration process for Australian Business Numbers (ABNs) and business names, including trademark searching. An Exposure Draft of the Business Names Registration Act 2011 was released for comment this week.

This means that businesses no longer have to register its business name in every State and Territory they want to trade in. The new service will replace the current State and Territory systems. It’s expected to be up and running in mid-2012.

When the registers merge, it appears that parties with the same names will be designated by a reference to the State(s) they are registered in. For example, Windscreens R Us in NSW and Victoria may become “Windscreens R Us (NSW)” and “Windscreens R Us (Vic)”.
